Computer Science in the Coming Year

Hi students, we’d like to share a few items about the Computer Science Department in the coming year.

  • First, we are committed to providing you with the best possible computer science education that we can.  We are restructuring classes, changing teaching formats, and working to ensure that we can continue to provide the sorts of experiences you’ve previously enjoyed in our classes.
  • We also recognize that these are not normal times, and that we must be responsive and flexible in light of the present situation.  We are thus making a one-year exception to the rule that courses taken on a pass-fail basis cannot count toward completion of the computer science major requirements.  Specifically, for the 2020-2021 academic year, any courses designated as pass-fail eligible may be taken on a pass-fail basis and still be used to fulfill computer science degree requirements.
  • In addition, because we will be unable to offer our regular colloquium series this year, any senior who has met all other major requirements by the end of the 2020-2021 academic year will be considered to have also met the colloquium requirement.  Colloquium has always been a way to gather as a community and be intellectually engaged in our field beyond the formal structure of courses.  We will continue to offer some opportunities to do this in the coming year, albeit in a reduced capacity.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any of us as you plan for the coming year.  Best wishes,

Stephen Freund
