The Software-Hardware Dance: an Evolution

We take a fresh, broad look at the symbiotic relationship between software and its enabler, hardware. After decades of development of general purpose machines, we find ourselves on the cusp of a new era — what computer architects John Hennessy and David Patterson call “a new golden age” for computation — where open-source, domain-specific hardware and software are designed as one. We wonder: What is possible if hardware becomes as malleable as software?
